JOHN ROSS HELMS

HEADLAND, AL… John Ross Helms, a resident of Headland, Alabama, passed away early Wednesday morning, April 5, 2023, at a Dothan hospital. He was 71.

          The family will have a private family service at a later date.

          Mr. Helms was born in Dothan, Alabama to the late John Adolphus Helms and Mary Ross Haynes Helms. He lived most of his life in the Headland, Alabama area. John was a 1970 graduate of Headland High School. He went on to play football at the University of Alabama for two years under Paul William “Bear” Bryant. Mr. Helms earned his teaching degree and moved to Columbus, Georgia and taught at Arnold Junior High School, where he met the love of his life (Susan). He and Susan got married and they moved back to Headland, Alabama, where they raised their family. John taught science for twenty-six years at Early County Middle School, before he retired. He was a member of the Wiregrass Pigeon Club. He was also a beekeeper and sold honey for many years. John Ross loved to fish. He was of the Methodist Faith.

          Leaving to cherish his memories are his wife, Susan Lane Helms; his sons, Alec Helms (Jamie) and Davy Helms (Megan) both of Huntsville, AL; his sister, Elsie Helms Alexander (Craig); and his grandchildren, Vivian, Fisher, Mary Crim, Franny, Elsie, John Chapel, Henry, Finn, and Emma.
