SHORTERVILLE, AL… Espy W. Smith, a resident of Shorterville, Alabama, passed away Thursday, January 11, 2024, at his home. He was 70.
Funeral services will be held 3:00 P.M. Sunday, January 14, 2024, at Haleburg Baptist Church with Reverend Ray Cobb, Reverend Matthew Quincey, and Reverend Bill Bond officiating. Burial will follow in the Haleburg Cemetery. Family will receive friends from 1:30 P.M. until service time in the church sanctuary. Wright Funeral Home & Crematory is in charge of the arrangements.
The family is accepting flowers or contributions may be made to the Haleburg Cemetery Fund, c/o Tippy Smith 10466 CR-47, Shorterville, Alabama 36373.
Mr. Smith was born in Ft. Gaines, Georgia, to the late Yancey Hayes Smith and Mary Etta Wallace Smith. He was a lifelong resident of Shorterville, Alabama / Haleburg, Alabama area. He was a 1971 graduate of Abbeville High School. He attended Wallace Community College. He was a member of the Columbia Masonic Lodge for over 44 years. He had worked with the Henry County Board of Education as a school bus driver for the 27 years. He was also engaged in farming.
Along with his parents, he was also preceded in death by his wife, Edith Sauls Smith.
Leaving to cherish his memories is his daughters, Amanda Smith (Hank Thornton), Elizabeth Shepard (Brandon), and Katie Vinson (Matthew); his sister, Mary Elner Teat (David); his brothers, Yancey Tipton Smith (Charlotte) and Robert Lee Smith; his grandchildren, Elijah Shepard, Emma Shepard, Madelyn Shepard, Evelyn Shepard, Makayla Smith, Cameron Smith, Khloe Smith, and Kylee Thornton; his great-grandchildren, Kaydence Fields, Major Neal, and Karter Neal; his several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Dr. Perry Mobley, Randy Davis, Stanley Parker, Daniel Teat, David Berglund, and Logan Adams. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be the Headland School Bus Drivers.
